Dollywood: three generations, two little boys and one loaf of cinnamon bread
Dolly Parton's theme park in the hills of her home county. Mountain coasters, gentle kiddie rides, live music, and a festival nearly every season.

We did Dollywood with the grandparents, and I was not sure what to expect. We have done big-name theme parks before, the kind where you leave more tired than when you arrived. Dollywood felt different from the moment we walked in. Slower. Kinder. Built into the hills instead of plopped beside them.
Dollywood is not just a theme park next to the mountains. It is woven into them, with rides that drop through the trees, shady hillside paths and craftspeople working at their forges and looms. It feels like East Tennessee, because it is.
For the little ones
Our three-year-old was the happiest person in the park. Wildwood Grove, the area built for younger kids, has gentle rides, nature-themed play areas and an indoor play space for when the weather turns. He rode the same little flying ride six times and shouted "AGAIN" every single time.
For the big kids and brave grandpas
Our seven-year-old just cleared the height mark for some of the family coasters and acted like he had won the lottery. Dollywood has 11 roller coasters now, including NightFlight Expedition, an indoor coaster new for 2026. Grandpa rode one coaster, came off grinning, and announced he was "good for another twenty years."
The food (yes, the cinnamon bread)
Everyone will tell you about the cinnamon bread, a warm pull-apart loaf with butter and icing. Everyone is right. Get one to share early in the day, and another to take home. The Southern comfort food here, skillet meals, fried chicken and fresh-baked everything, is better than it has any right to be at a theme park.
Somewhere between the bluegrass show and the second loaf of cinnamon bread, I noticed I had not looked at the time in hours. For a family that used to run on a calendar, that was the best ride in the park.
A festival for every season
| Festival | When (2026 season) | Why go |
|---|---|---|
| Flower & Food Festival | Mid-April to early June | Huge plant sculptures, blooms and spring menus |
| Summer Celebration | Mid-June to early August | Longer hours and night shows |
| Harvest Festival | Mid-September to October 31 | Fall color, pumpkins and gospel music |
| Smoky Mountain Christmas | Early November to early January | Millions of lights, Christmas shows and hot cocoa |
Dates change every year, so check the Dollywood calendar before you book. Splash Country, the separate water park next door, is open in the summer season only.
